Woman charged after fatal drunk driving accident

On Oct. 19, it was reported that a driver who survived a fatal head-on car crash in Wisconsin on Oct. 13 said that she had been taken into custody three times in three days for driving under the influence of alcohol. The 53-year-old woman was charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.

Couple facing multiple felony drug charges after raid

A 42-year-old Wisconsin man and his 46-year-old girlfriend are facing multiple felony drug counts after police allegedly recovered more than 660 grams of methamphetamine during searches of their residence, vehicle and storage units. A representative of the West Central Drug Task Force said that the drug haul was the largest in the unit's history and resulted from a lengthy investigation. Charges against the couple were filed on Oct. 11, and they are scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 31.

Arrests in 2016 related to drug possession

In 2016, there were over 1.57 million arrests in Wisconsin and the rest of the nation for drug law violations, according to the Uniform Crime Report released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The figure represents a 5.63-percent rise over the number for 2015 and is more than three times the number of arrests for all violent crimes.

Laws involving controlled substances

Under Wisconsin statutes, a controlled substance is an illegal drug that could potentially cause a person harm. Both state and federal governments have the ability to regulate controlled substances, meaning those who are accused of being in possession of controlled substances can face legal punishments at either or both levels.
