Woman charged after fatal drunk driving accident

On Oct. 19, it was reported that a driver who survived a fatal head-on car crash in Wisconsin on Oct. 13 said that she had been taken into custody three times in three days for driving under the influence of alcohol. The 53-year-old woman was charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.

The woman reportedly told a sheriff's deputy that she was driving from Muscoda to Madison to visit her boyfriend. While driving, she said that she had consumed two beers and a malt beverage. The accident occurred about 30 minutes after she left Muscoda. The crash took place on Highway 14 at about 7:12 p.m. in Iowa County. She was transported to a hospital for treatment of her injuries, where she remained overnight. The other driver involved in the crash, a 38-year-old Hillsboro man, was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

The accused woman reportedly submitted to a blood test while she was at the hospital. She was in court on Oct. 19 for her initial appearance and was being held on a $10,000 cash bond.

When drunk driving accidents turn deadly, the penalties for those who were found to be under the influence could be severe. In many cases, those individuals could face significant prison time, fines and a criminal record that could prevent them from obtaining employment after they have paid their debt to society. Depending on the circumstances, a criminal law attorney may investigate the alleged drunk driving incident to determine if breath, blood or urine samples were properly taken or if the accused person's rights were somehow violated. The attorney may work to find viable defenses to the accusations.
