Following the death of George Floyd, many have advocated for a greater effort to abolish abusive policing practices. In response, the federal government will be funding the Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets (CAHOOTS) program. The program calls for “mobile teams with mental health practitioners trained in de-escalating…potentially volatile situations.” An ample amount of 911 calls occur due to situations that either involved substance abuse, or mental health crises. CAHOOTS crisis teams will now be involved in the de-escalation of such situations. Learn more here.
