Experts fear that as pandemic financial assistance is drawn back, there will be a “second wave” of domestic violence. Due to the fact that many domestic violence victims rely on their abuser for financial support, assistance being taken away could be detrimental. Support services are expecting another wave of help calls, as this crucial assistance is lessened. University of Melbourne social work professor Cathy Humphreys says, “Women without work, who are economically dependent on their abusive partner, are at increased risk of being trapped in family violence.”
